Fakten

  • The winner of several architecrural prizes, both local and international.
  • Famous for its wineglass shape, as referred to by its architect. The shape consists of a puffy triangle which lays ontop of a narrow pedestal, surrounded by glass sheets.
  • Adjacent to Asia House to the north and America House to the east.
  • Tallest building in Israel to go through a complete, overall reconstruction process.
  • A typical floor is 850 Sqm. with the core takes up 130 Sqm. inside.
  • Total weight is about 32,000 tons.
  • Thanks to public pressure, the iconic tower was saved from having its facades changed dramatically during the rebuilding process. It is now one of a few non-Bauhaus or 1920s romantic buildings to be on the list of the Municipal Preservation Committee.
  • Built especially for the IBM Company, the tower's unique design is supposed to resemble a computer's keyboard or a typing machine roller.
  • The main foundation is an 80 cm thick circular concrete "base" in the depth of 18.2 meters underground. Its diameter is 30 meters.
  • The two uppermost floors, and one floor inside the conal pedestal, are mechanical floors.
  • Each vertical load-bearing beam transfers pressure of 330 tons to the conal pedestal and the lower section of the core.
  • The reinforced concrete floorplates inside the core are 15 centimeters thick.
  • Each core level, including its internal slabs, was completed every 9 days.
  • The unusual "puffy triangular" floor-plan features better passive solar resistance than a conventional square or circular plans.
  • Each floor is divided into three wings, subdivided into 10 modules, based on the structural reinforced concrete beams which resonate from the core to the vertical concrete beams of the facade.
  • Due to the vertical load-bearing beams, visible as part of the facade, the inner space is completely column-free.
  • A new lobby on Weizman Street, commercial floor and several other new improvements were all part of the 2002-2004 rebuilding process. The former lobby now serves as a glass-enclosed café.
  • With structural completion 3 months ahead of schedule, construction period lasted only 27 months.
  • There are 600 precast sunshade units on the facade.
  • Surrounded by 10 cm thick precast external walls.
  • The all-new ceramic tile facade altered the original, 2x2 cm Italian tile facade only by colour from brown to beige.
  • Topped out in 1977, the building wasn't fully completed until early 1979.
  • Initial plans for the tower were already made by the IBM Company and the architects in 1971; excavation followed after 3 years.
  • Glass walls 8 meters tall and 12 millimeters thick hang from the ceiling in a ring around the lobby, with a total circumference of 98 meters.
  • The original lobby reserved much of its space for rotating exhibits. Behind the reception desk there was a large world map designed with the inspiration of the IBM logo.
  • Motti Zisser, the main share holder of the Europe-Israel Company, bought the tower in 1999 for $50 US million, and spent another $20 US million on the rebuilding process.
  • Before reconstruction, each original window began 85 cm above the floor and was 170 cm tall and 330 cm wide; it was divided into three equal rectangular panes with only the middle one openable.
  • The 4 underground floors extend the whole area of the plot 2,700 Sqm. and are 13.20 m deep.
  • The first floor is 11.5 meters above the ground, elevated on an inverted-cone pedestal.
  • Each typical floor is 10 meters wide from the core and took 10 days to complete on average.
  • The core carries the entire vertical pressure and can be divided into two sections. The part above the conal pedestal with 30 cm thick external walls, and the part below, with 45 cm thick external walls. The three corners of the core are each 100 cm thick.
  • Before reconstruction, the 200-seat cafeteria for IBM employees on the first floor had a colorful artistic wall-carpet designed by Michael Eisman around the core.
  • Each of the 33 load-bearing vertical beams on the facades was precast. It is distant by 110 cm from the window panes, 22 cm wide and consists of 690 cm tall (height of two floors) sections.
  • Each section of the vertical load-bearing beams on the facade is 6.9 meters tall, weighs a total 3.5 tons, and took around 25 minutes to assemble.
  • Another famous wineglass-shaped tower is Rainier Tower=Rainier Tower] in Seattle.
