Fakten

  • The Swan Bells represents part of the Barrack Square redevelopment, situated on Perth's Swan River.
  • The tower is one of the largest musical instrument in the world.
  • The spire is made from glass and is 80 metres (262 feet) high.
  • The 18 bells collectively weigh around 9 tonnes and emit so much noise that sound is controlled and directed by movable louvers and doors.
  • The bell chamber is six-storeys in height, was cast in situ from reinforced concrete and is enveloped in copper 'sails' and glass.
  • The building is so-called both because of its siting on the Swan River and because the symbol of Western Australia is the black swan.
  • Tower houses the historic bells of London's St. Martin-in-the-Fields gifted to the people of Western Australia by the UK to celebrate the Bicentennial.
  • Originally the full height was 120 meters, however the project was scaled back due to community angst regarding public financing.
