  • The cathedral has 125 columns.
  • In 1533 the roof and furniture were destroyed by fire. Much of the Gothic interior was destroyed by iconoclastic Protestants between 1565 and 1581.
  • The plan features seven aisles and a depth of 65 meters.
  • Originally a church, it was elevated to cathedral status in 1559.
  • The north tower with four clock faces is a dominant feature of the Antwerp skyline.
  • The Cathedral of Our Lady is the largest Gothic construction in the Benelux countries.
  • The original plan included a third tower in the center of the cathedral and with its 180 m height it would have been highest in the world at the time.
  • It takes 515 steps to the top of the tower.
  • In 1999, the cathedral was designated a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The unfinished southern tower is 65m high.
  • The unfinished central tower is 43m high.
