Westerkerk

Fakten

• The rectangular church is expressed in Dutch Renaissance style and is built from brick and stone with a wooden barrel vault over the nave.
• The twelve chandeliers in the church are electric and are replicas of the originals.
• Westerkerk was officially opened in 1631 on Whitsunday.
• This is the largest Protestant church in the Netherlands.
• The church's tower exhibits the symbol of the Imperial Crown of Maximillian of Austria, a gift to Amsterdam for its support for the Austro-Burgundian princes.
• The artist Rembrandt is buried in the church and in 1966 Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus were married here.
