Union Station

Fakten

• The station opened May 1939 amidst three days of parades, celebrations, and pageantry.
• Opening dedication ceremonies officiated by Los Angeles Mayor Fletcher Bowron and California Governor Culbert Olson.
• Before the station was officially opened, Hollywood made use of the facility when Paramount Studio ran the first train out of the station as a nationwide promotion for its film “Union Pacific.”
• California's Spanish heritage can be seen throughout the terminal: mission tile roofs, arcades, arches, stucco walls and wood-beamed ceilings.
• The walls are lined with cork in order to minimize echos inside the building.
• Built through the cooperation of three major railroads in the LA area: Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe.
• Often seen in movies. “The Way We Were,” “Blade Runner,” and “Guilty By Suspicion” are amongst the many feature films that have used the station as a shooting location.
• Located across the street from Olvera Street, where Los Angeles was founded in the 18th Century.
• To return the station to its original grandeur, the property was purchased in 1990 by Catellus Development.
