Fakten

  • Headquarters of Playboy Magazine from 1967 to 1990. The name "Playboy" was spelled out on both sides of the building in 9-foot illuminated letters.
  • The height includes a 97-foot tower which used to hold the Lindbergh Beacon. The beacon was turned off when taller buildings were built in the immediate neighborhood, so it would not shine into apartment windows.
  • The name reverted to the original "Palmolive Building" during its 2002 conversion to condominiums. This conversion cost US $135 million.
  • The Lindbergh Beacon at the top of the tower used to be one of Chicago's most visible landmarks, and could be seen from airplanes 225 miles away.
  • The tower was originally meant to be built in stages, with extra floors added as needed. However in 1928 when the developer merged with Colgate Corporation its space needs increased and the entire structure was built in one stage.
  • The setbacks and recessed surfaces of the facade are accented at night by floodlight illumination.
  • The original elevator doors were art-deco bas-reliefs of primitive figures in natural settings by sculptor Enrique Alfarez.
