Fakten

  • The building's design is very similar to another Harry Weese building, Grace Street Towers on the North Side. Both have similar façades and triangular penthouses on the roof.
  • The vestibule walls are inset with three circular paintings of neighborhood landmarks: the Museum of Science and Industry, the Robie House, and Lake Village East (this building).
  • This is the northernmost of the lakeshore highrises in the Hyde Park-Kenwood area.
  • The building won a 1974 Honor Award from the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
  • The footprint form is a polygonal rhomboid with 38 sides.
  • The original plan for this site called for two 40-story towers, but was scaled down because of community pressure.
  • The layout gives the building a shape closer to an oval than a rectangle, which permits energy savings from an efficient ratio of area to perimeter but also allowed the use of regular mass-produced forms in construction because there are no actual curves.
  • Each living room and bedroom is located on at least one 45° corner.
