Fakten

  • In December 1988, the Detroit Downtown Development Authority spent $70,000 on decorative awnings for the now abandoned Statler Hotel to try and improve its appearance for the NAIAS (North American International Auto Show).
  • The hotel proved so popular, after its opening, that a 200-room wing addition were added onto the back of the hotel along Washington Boulevard in 1916.
  • The Hotel Stater Detroit was demolished in 2005 following the approval of the Detroit Historic District Commission.
  • The hotel underwent an extensive interior renovation and reconstruction in 1963 to modernize the structure, which included the renovation of the top two floors into the "Hilton Towers," -- a "hotel within a hotel" concept.
  • The hotel underwent an extensive renovation in 1937 designed by Detroit-based Smith, Hinchman, & Grylls, and constructed by general contractor Jerome A. Utley, which includes both interior and exterior changes, particularly the reconstruction of the lower amenity floors.
  • This hotel's architectural style is Georgian, which is a subset of English Renaissance Revival.
  • According to the original blueprints, one of the penthouse roof levels lies at 226' above the street. And Sanborn Maps list the other at 232' above the street.
  • A lawsuit from preservationists has temporarily delayed the city's plans to demolish the former hotel building.
  • In April 1984, a major renovation proposal, Atrium Place, a 334-unit apartment project, was announced by a group of Southfield developers, but even after securing city and government grants to start the renovation, costs for the project skyrocket over the years, and the project failed in 1988.
  • The Statler, now the Detroit Heritage Hotel, without a major investor capable of paying off the hotel's debts, was closed on October 15, 1975 after failing to meet a deadline to pay its electricity and heating bills.
  • City Club Apartments CBD Detroit is currently being built on the site of Hotel Statler Detroit.
