Fakten

  • The orginal walrus tusked ivories were replaced with plastic for fear of skewering pedestrians below.
  • In May 2005, the building was sold by the City of Seattle to the Arctic Club Hotel LLC for $5.1 million.
  • When the $9 million renovation is expected to be complete in the summer of 2006, the building will become a 117 room hotel.
  • Most interior details have been lost through the years. One survivor is the Dome Room topped by a rococo gilt and stained glass skylight that remains one of the grandest interiors in downtown Seattle.
  • True to the building's origins brought about by Klondike gold, there is Alaskan marble in the corridors and 29 walrus heads on the third floor exterior.
  • Landmark status was approved on December 17, 1993 following a 9-0 vote.
  • Built to house the prestigious Arctic Club.
  • The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
  • One of the earliest buildings to use terra cotta panels over a steel reinforced concrete frame.
