  • Seattle's first major high-rise building built in 30 years as well as the the first with glass curtain walls.
  • First building in USA over six stories to incorporate pre-stressed concrete members.
  • Seattle's longest escalators, linking Second and First Avenues.
  • Named in honor of Matthew G. Norton, grandfather of businessman Norton Clapp (1906-1995), one of the five original investors in the Space Needle.
  • The curtain wall consists of 1,792 pre-glazed spandrel and window panel units.

  • Developed by the owners of its neighbor to the north by the United Exchange Building Corporation.
  • SOM's design architect for the Norton Building was Myron Goldsmith, one of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's most distinguished students.
  • It was the Norton Building that introduced the Bauhaus school of architecture to Seattle.
  • Seattle's first "international-style" that was technologically innovative in its composite structural system and its curtainwall, which was assembled from preglazed units.
