Fakten

  • Constructed of Indiana Limestone, the memorial is a modified Greek design. The memorial is approached from the south along a landscaped mall to the entrance guarded by Sphinxes named Memory and Future.
  • Dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge on November 11, 1926, the Liberty Memorial was conceived as a monument to peace and to commemorate those who died and served in the First World War.
  • The observation deck is open to the public seven days a week, is accessable by elevator for a nominal fee, and offers unparalleled views of the surrounding cityscape.
  • In 2000, the US Congress passed a law introduced by Missouri Senator Kit Bond officially naming the Liberty Memorial the only World War I memorial and museum authorized by the USA.
  • The fully restored archives and all new research facilities will provide scholars and researchers access to the thousands of objects and documents that comprise the museum collection.
  • Additional space and added facilities will provide the opportunity to more fully exhibit the world-class Liberty Memorial Museum collection – 85% of which has never been seen by the public.
  • $20 million in bonds were approved on April 6, 2004 to help construct the museum underneath the memorial.
