Fakten

  • This is the branch courthouse; Independence is the county seat of Jackson County, MO.
  • The meetings former President Harry S Truman presided over in the early stages of his career in public service were at the Independence Courthouse. That explains why people who look for remnants of Truman's career, often find they are at the wrong courthouse.
  • Charles Keck is responsible for the carvings on the facade and the bronze statue of General Andrew Jackson - the county's namesake - that stands on the building's north side. At one point 3 of the upper floors were home to the county jail, with a capacity of 450 inmates.
  • The limestone tower is detailed with elaborate wrought grillwork. Marble from Italy, Germany, and France was used on the lobby walls, floors, columns and pilasters.
