Fakten

  • Built as the headquarters for an aluminum company, with aluminum walls displaying Alcoa's pride in their material.
  • One of the most famous skyscrapers of the early postwar period, for its advanced modern architecture.
  • The structure consists of 2 adjoining slabs with a glass lobby attached to one inside corner.
  • The aluminum walls are 1/8-inch thick, with a distinctive X design on each spandrel panel.
  • In addition to being the first skyscraper with an all-aluminum facade, the building originally had all-aluminum ceilings, wiring, and water pipes.
  • The building is fitted with a unique heating and cooling system in the ceiling; this resulted in no mechanical systems in the outer walls, giving the building an extra 1400 square metres of rentable floor area.
