Fakten

  • In 2001 the Zilker Christmas Tree was lit with red, white and blue lights as a memorial to the people who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks 3 months earlier.
  • The "Big Tree" is made up of thirty nine 189 foot long strands of 25 watt bulbs with 87 bulbs on each strand. In all 3,159 bulbs of blue, green, red and yellow lights make up the tree. A 10 foot star with 150 bulbs tops the tree. The tree is visible from miles around Central Austin.
  • The "Big Tree" was designed by D.J. Kozlowski, Odie Bull and James "Bud" Wade. They were on hand this year when the lights were being strung on the tower. 2002 will be the 35th year anniversary of the first tree lighting.
  • Tallest structure(s) in Austin when built in 1895 not counting the Texas State Capitol.
  • The first tree lighting was on December 10, 1967 by Mayor Pro Tem Emma Long.
  • A height of 150 feet has been cited for the towers on occasion; however this height includes the 15 foot tall pole that the towers stand on. Technically the towers are 165 feet tall.
  • Moonlight Tower was featured in Richard Linklater's 1993 movie, "Dazed and Confused". The tower was the focal point in a fictional small town in Texas.
