Fakten

  • The Woodbury County Courthouse is one of the largest Prairie Style buildings ever built and the only large civic building in America erected in that style.
  • The sheathing is of light brown Roman brick with terra-cotta trim.
  • The interior is centered on the 75 foot-wide rotunda featuring a glass dome, murals by the artist John Norton, and ornamentation of terra-cotta, cast iron, and wood.
  • It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
  • The entrance facade on the west side features a row of narrow piers with terra-cotta capitals and a sculpted panel over the entry by Alfonzo Iannelli. Other sculptures by Iannelli are on the north side and on the tower.
  • It consists of a three-story block at street level topped with an eight-story office tower above - a theme reminiscent of the Oakland City Hall or the Nebraska State Capitol.
  • It was named one of the 50 Most Significant Iowa Buildings of the 20th Century by the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
