Fakten

  • The present-day Cathedral dates back to the 13th Century, but there was a Norman church at Old Sarum towards the end of the 11th Century.
  • The Chapter House contains an original copy of the Magna Carta, one of the most important documents in English history and sealed in 1215.
  • Between 1788 and 1791 the Cathedral was renovated by James Wyatt. During this remodelling, the Bell Tower, built in 1265, was demolished and the churchyard was replaced with grass.
  • The Cathedral was restored again between 1860 and 1878, this time by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The top 30 feet of the spire was rebuilt in 1948 to 1951, and a comprehensive repair programme started in 1985 was finally completed in 2000.
  • Construction on the new Cathedral began in 1220, when Bishop Poore laid the foundation stone. The cloisters were built between 1240 and 1270, with dedication of the Cathedral taking place in 1258.
  • 60 years later, around 1315, the great tower and spire were added. Although at the time the spire was shorter than Lincoln Cathedral, Old St. Paul's Cathedral and the 431ft tower of Malmesbury Abbey, it stands today as the tallest spire in the United Kingdom.
