Fakten

  • Combined with the Woodward Building, John Hand Building, and Empire Building, Brown Marx was a part of what was billed as being the "heaviest corner on earth" in the early 1900s.
  • Once slated for a $22 million renovation into condominiums to be completed by Fall 2007.
  • This served as the Birmingham headquarters of U.S. Steel until it relocated to the Flintridge Building in Fairfield in 1951.
  • When opened in 1906, its success in luring tenants resulted in an addition doubling its size by the end of the decade.
  • Tallest building in Alabama from 1905-1909; surpassed by the Empire Building.
  • In December 2009, the aluminum facade atop the tower came loose during a wind storm and was subsequently removed.
  • In later renovations during the 1960s or 1970s, the elaborate, beaux-arts cornice was covered with a white, aluminum facade.
  • Before the addition of the modern penthouse, the Brown Marx Building was 210 feet tall.
