Fakten

  • The Heidelberg Hotel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
  • Takes its name from the Mississippi hotelman Roy Heidelberg.
  • In 1931, the hotel was briefly the Louisiana State Capitol during a power struggle between governor Huey Long and lieutenant governor Paul Cyr. Cyr declared the hotel as the capitol when Long refused to hand over power after winning a seat in the U.S. Senate.
  • In addition to numerous Louisiana politicians, former U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Jimmy Carter, as well as Cuban President Fidel Castro have all been guests of the hotel.
  • The hotel closed in 1985 and remained vacant until 2004 when a $70 million renovation was undertaken.
  • The renovations of the Old Heidelberg and Capitol House were completed and officially reopened as the Baton Rouge Hilton Capitol Center on August 30, 2006.
