Fakten

  • This building was constructed with pre-stressed concrete slabs for each floor, lifted into place on the structural steel frame.
  • This is the first post-World War II high-rise to be demolished in Dayton.
  • The building operated under three different names over its lifespan: the Mall Motor Inn from 1966 until 1979, the Sheraton Dayton Hotel from 1979 until 1983, and the Admiral Benbow Hotel from 1983 until it closed in 1986.
  • Because of the pre-stressed floor slabs, manual demolition lasted from late October 2006 to April 2007. The site will become home to a new public transit pavilion for the Regional Transit Authority, which is housed in the neighboring Wright Stop Plaza.
  • The last major proposal to renovate and reuse the Admiral Benbow Hotel was made in May 2001.
  • The first floor slab weighed 585 tons (594 metric tons), with all other slabs at 425 tons (432 metric tons). Slabs were lifted by approximately 8 ft (2.4 m) per hour.
  • Called 'Market Street Lofts,' the new project would have included a transportation hub for the Miami Valley Regional Transit Authority in addition to retail (1st floor), office (2nd-5th floor), and residential uses (6th-13th floor).
