Fakten

  • The dome weighs 30,800,000 lbs.
  • The total cost of construction for the building itself, excluding the $594,172 required to furnish the interior, was $6,791,595.
  • The Tiffany Chandelier weighs 5 tons and is big enough to hold a VW Beetle. The light has 202 bulbs, the chain is 101 feet in length, and is suspended 50 feet above the rotunda's floor.
  • 2001-present, capitol rotunda restoration and building renovations / NBBJ architects, with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott as historic architect.
  • The Capitol is the fourth tallest all-masonary dome in the world after St. Paul's, London, St. Peter's, Rome, and St. Isaac's in St. Petersburg, Russia
  • The state capitol has the largest collection of Tiffany bronze in the world that bears the mark of Louis Comfort Tiffany. It was his last big commission prior to his death. The building also has more marble than any other state capitol.
  • The dome of the Capitol has been cracked twice by earthquakes, in 1949 (7.1) and February 28, 2001 (6.8) and both times the epicenter was within 10 miles of the Capitol
  • The 1949 earthquake badly damaged the cupola. It was removed and rebuilt of sturdier material. The original 15 ton stone cupola was replaced with a 800 pound aluminum cap.
  • The building houses the Washington State Legislature, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, and the Treasurer offices .
  • Hardy Holzman Pfieffer architects, who had begun in 2000 to develop a proposal for seismic upgrades and renovation, are working with the state and engineers in an attempt to reopen the building to the public by late 2004.
