Fakten

  • The old Central Station was one of Chicago's major ports of entry for visitors and migrants from the southern United States.
  • The station consisted of a 9-story main building with a 13-story clock tower, a waiting room to the east over the train tracks, and a 600-foot long train shed to the south.
  • Central Station was oriented to the north, overlooking Grant Park. Access was from Lake Park Place, a small street perpendicular to Michigan Avenue that does not exist any longer.
  • A giant archway through the front of the building provided a dropoff port for horse-drawn coaches or cars.
  • The waiting room had a large 3-story bay window for passengers to look out on Lake Michigan.
  • The Central Station residential project, begun toward the end of the 20th Century, takes its name from this building.
