Fakten

  • On 16th May 1968, one Ivy Hodge, a resident on the 18th floor, made a cup of tea on her gas stove which caused a minor explosion estimated at around 2 lbs per sq inch pressure. The resultant explosion (which she survived) caused a progressive collapse at the corner of the building killing four people, injured 17 and destroying one whole end.
  • The accident called into question the 'system-built' blocks that were being erected all across Britain in the 1960s, and made the British public wary of high-rise living.
  • Ronan Point was system-built from large, pre-formed concrete panels and was poorly constructed with critical bolts being omitted.
  • Ronan Point was refurbished and strengthened after the accident, but it was finally torn down in 1986. All that remains today is a small, single-storey electrical sub-station which was once housed in Ronin Point's basement.
