Struktur allgemein

existent [fertiggestellt]

  • It is one of the world's first and rare Gothic mosques, and was built between 1885 and 1886 by architect Sarkis Balyan for Sultan Abdulhamid II.
  • The mosque is one of the important examples of late Ottoman architecture. It is alleged that Sultan Abdulhamid himself prepared the plan of the mosque. The interior decoration is extravagant and sophisticated. Rooms are located on the second floor, accessed by staircases flanking to the east and west. The room on the right, the Sufera room with walls covered with 18 carat gold, had been designated for ambassadors and other high-ranking foreign officials. The room on the left, on the other hand, was the Hünkar pew, where the Sultan would pray in private. The Hünkar pew had an oil-painted ceiling. The single-balcony minarette accentuates the heavy decorations of the mosque. The central dome was contructed over a base of four heavy iron columns. The base was pierced by 16 windows and ornated with carved stars. The dome itself has lavish ornamentation. The walls have 17 windows. Borders with inscriptions of chapters from the Koran encircle the interior walls.
