Fakten

  • A church was originally built on this site in 1382. In 1666, it was partially destroyed by the Great Fire of London, and subsequently rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1671.
  • The tower, one of Wren's most daring designs featuring an elevated spire supported by four buttresses, was completed in 1699. Between 1817 and 1821, the body of the church was dismantled and rebuilt, but the tower remained.
  • On 10th May 1941, the church was gutted during a bombing raid. The tower, however, survived intact. The Corporation of London, unwilling to demolish the ruins, turned the bombed out church into a public garden in the 1970s, with a fountain, ivy and ferns where the pews and altar used to stand.
