  • The Rumeli (European) Castle was built by the Ottoman Turks in just 3 months in 1452, at the opposite shores of the earlier Anatolian (Asian) Castle (1393) in order to block the entrance of the Bosphorus during the Siege Of Constantinople (May 29, 1453).
  • Long-range Turkish siege cannons, called "Balyemez" (probably a Turkish derivation of the contemporary German cannon "Faule Metze") were used in both the Rumeli Castle and the Anatolian Castle at the opposite shores, in order to prevent the Genoese ships from entering the Bosphorus and reinforcing the defense of the Byzantines. The "Balyemez" were the most advanced cannons in the world throughout the 15th Century. They had the longest range of any cannon in the world, and could throw cannon balls weighing over 1.6 tonnes - which were the heaviest in the world at that time...
