  • Anatolian (Asian) Castle was built in 1393 by the Ottoman emperor Bayezid II "The Thunderbolt", who was preparing to lay siege at Constantinople (Istanbul), which was then the only remaining part of the once great Byzantine Empire (Bayezid II having conquered much of the Balkans). However, Bayezid II never found the opportunity to lay siege on Constantinople, due to the never-ending wars he had to conduct in the Balkans against the Serbs and Hungarians, and in Anatolia against the Mongols of Timur (Tamerlane). The Turks had to cancel their plans of taking Constantinople (Istanbul) for 60 years, until 1453 - during the reign of Mehmed II "The Conqueror".
  • During the Siege Of Constantinople (May 29, 1453), long-range Turkish siege cannons, called "Balyemez" (probably a Turkish derivation of the contemporary German cannon "Faule Metze") were used in both the Anatolian (Asian) Castle (1393) and the Rumeli (European) Castle (1452) at the opposite shores, in order to prevent the Genoese ships from entering the Bosphorus and reinforcing the defense of the Byzantines. The "Balyemez" were the most advanced cannons in the world throughout the 15th Century. They had the longest range of any cannon in the world, and could throw cannon balls weighing over 1.6 tonnes - which were the heaviest in the world at that time...
