  • The first Unitarian Church is noted for having the largest bell ever cast in the foundry of Paul Revere and Son.
  • Its tall steeple stands just east of downtown across the Providence River.
  • Designed by John Holden Greene, its design shows influences of the Federal style as well as the work of James Gibbs - in particular his St. Martin-in-the Fields in London.
  • The church was dedicated in 1816.
  • First Unitarian is of ashlar-laid white stone, obtained locally from a quarry in Johnston.
  • The main entrance exhibits a portico with pediment above which rises the tower and tall spire.
  • In 1966 the church was badly damaged by fire following a lightning-strike.
