Fakten

  • Formerly a Catholic Church known as the Church of St. Nicholas (Sint Nicolaaskerk), it was taken over by Protestants in the late 16th Century after Catholics were banned from public worship during The Alteration. Catholics later built what is now Sint Nicolaaskerk as its replacement.
  • In 1951, the church was closed to the public because it was in danger of collapsing. However, a 24-year restoration began in 1955, and the church reopened on March 14, 1979.
  • Thought to be the oldest hall church in the Netherlands.
  • Construction began near the year 1300 and progressed in eight major stages, reaching its present form in 1571.
