Fakten

  • This building, along with the neighboring 9 East Third Street, was replaced with the National City Center.
  • Paul Laurence Dunbar, a Dayton native and the first important African-American poet, worked as an elevator operator in this building while producing some of his early work.
  • The Callahan Building was constructed in two distinct phases. A 7-story buiding with a distinctive clock tower and steeply-pitched roof was completed in 1886. A vertical addition in 1920 removed the top two floors, before adding 7 additional floors and placing the clock tower on top.
