  • Since much of the structural support comes from its walls, the building features only seven support columns.
  • The building was redesigned three tiimes before it was approved by the Portland Design Commission and Portland Development Commission.
  • The building features: a heat recovery system, CO2 sensors, low-flow shower heads and faucets, high-efficiency appliances, occupancy sensors, and compact fluorescent lights.
  • In 2007, the building won the 2006 I. Donald Terner award.
  • The mission of 8NW8 building is to provide safe, clean and affordable housing for individuals with special needs.
  • The design reinterprets traditional Portland block forms in a fresh and unconventional manner.
  • Base, middle and top of the building are a play of transparent, solid, curvilinear and rhythmic forms harmoniously composed.
  • The building features corner common rooms and balconies over looking the park at each floor level. The two-story base is wrapped in a curvilinear glass wall facade set behind concrete pilotis at the sidewalk edge.
  • The mechanical systems include naturally ventilated rooms with continuous bathroom exhaust and air-conditioned corridors and common rooms.
  • 8NW8 structure replaced the Danmoore Hotel.
