Fakten

  • Named in honor of Dr. W. Clarke Wescoe (M.D.) who served as Dean of the University of Kansas Medical School in Kansas City, Kansas from 1950-60 and Chancellor of the University from 1960-69.
  • When proposed in 1967 to house KU's Humanities Department, it would have been the tallest building in Kansas and the tallest academic building in the Continental USA.
  • The two 19th century buildings demolished so Wescoe Hall could be built in the heart of the campus across from the administration building were Robinson Gymnasium and Haworth Hall.
  • "Wescoe Beach" is the slang term for a large open space in front of Wescoe Hall where male students gather on sunny spring and fall days to watch female students go to and from class along Jayhawk Boulevard.
  • The skyscraper was never built because streets, sewers, parking and related infrastructure on the then-century old campus could not be modified enough to handle the density such a huge structure would create.
  • Wescoe Hall was scaled down and constructed as a four-story building, 2-stories above ground and 2-stories below ground, and opened in the Fall of 1974.
