Fakten

  • The Glass Hall facade uses approximately 20,000 square meters of 17.5mm laminated, heat-strengthened glass.
  • Halls A through D, the Exhibiton Hall, the Reception Hall and 34 conference rooms cater to a wide range of needs and requests.
  • The cost of the project was more than US$1.5 billion, or about 165 billion yen.
  • For the design of the building, Rafael Vinoly Architects won the 1989 International Design Competition, the first international architectural competition in Japan.
  • The glass hall is roughly 225m long and 31.7m wide.
  • The glass hall sits where the Old Tokyo Metropolitan City Hall once did, before it was relocated to Shinjuku.
  • Construction took place between October 1992 and May 1996, and the Forum opened in January of 1997.
  • The Tokyo International Forum is Japan's largest congress center.
  • The most visually interesting element is the almond-shaped "G Block" Glass Hall Building, which from the inside is said to resemble an x-ray of a whale, because of the ribbed steel beams supporting the 58-meter high roof structure.
  • The International Forum includes two theaters, one among the largest in the world, over 6,000 square meters of exhibition space, several conference rooms, restaurants, shops and other amenities.
