Fakten

  • On November 8, 1966, an amendment to the Louisiana State Constitution was passed authorizing the construction of what would become the Superdome.
  • Construction would commence on August 11, 1971, and would be complete on August 3, 1975.
  • Able to accommodate a maximum of 72,003 spectators for football, this is the home of the NFL's New Orleans Saints, the Tulane Green Wave, the Sugar Bowl, and host of the Super Bowl on six separate occasions.
  • The dome is 4 hectares (9.7 acres) in area and is the world’s largest clear-span structure.
  • The steel-framed stadium became the largest Hurricane shelter in New Orleans in anticipation of and during Hurricane Katrina's wrath on August 29, 2005. More than 10,000 citizens and stranded tourists sought shelter here.
  • The extreme winds from Katrina were enough to shred the roof's teflon coating and open several holes in the roof, exposing the interior to the outside.
  • Hurricane Katrina caused an estimated $140 million in damage to the facility.
  • After remaining closed since Hurricane Katrina struck, this re-opened on Monday, September 25, 2006, with the NFL's Saints deteating the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 23-3 in front of a sold-out crowd.
