  • Often referred to as the "Old Gray Lady" due to its distinctive color, the stadium is named in honor of the American Legion.
  • On November 19, 1927, the stadium opened with Howard College (now Samford University) shutting out Birmingham-Southern College by a score of 9-0.
  • Currently the stadium can accommodate a maximum of 71,673 spectators.
  • This has been the site of four NCAA Football, post-season bowls during its tenure: the Dixie Bowl between 1947-1948, the Hall of Fame Classic between 1977-1985, the All-American Bowl between 1986-1990 and the Papajohns.com Bowl since 2006.
  • During its tenure, the stadium has also served as a home field for the University of Alabama, numerous professional football leagues, and as a host for 1996 Olympic soccer.
  • This is currently the third largest stadium in the state of Alabama after Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa and Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.
  • This served as the location of the annual Iron Bowl football game which was played between heated rivals Auburn University and the University of Alabama annually from 1948 to 1998.
  • Between June and August 2005, the 9,000 seat eastern upper deck constructed in 1961 was removed due to its deteriorating condition.
  • The professional football teams that called this home included the Birmingham Americans and Vulcans of the WFL between 1974-1975, the Stallions of the USFL between 1983-1985, the Fire of the WLAF between 1991-1992, the Barracudas of the CFL in 1995 and the Bolts of the XFL in 2001.
  • This now serves as home field for the Blazers of the University of Alabama at Birmingham football team, the SWAC football championship game and the annual “Super-Six" AHSAA state high school football championships.
