  • Cited in Simon Jenkins' 'England's Thousand Best Churches'.
  • Spires excepted, St. Botolph's has the tallest church tower in England.
  • The tower is crowned by a beautiful octagon enriched with pinnacles and once carried a beacon to guide ships into Boston harbour.
  • Work on St. Botolph's, which replaced an earlier Norman church, began in 1309. The impressive tower was added in the fifteenth century and work was completed in 1520. It was restored in 1857 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.
  • The parish library of St. Botolph's began in 1634 and has occupied the same room ever since. It now contains some 1,200 books.
  • The church has one of the finest parish libraries in England with almost 1200 books mostly printed from c.1500 to 1690.
