Fakten

  • Christ Church was the birthplace of both the Bible Society and the Shaftesbury Society. It also played a key role in the abolition of slavery both in Britain and the United States, and has close American ties; the spire is in-laid with stars and stripes in honour of President Lincoln.
  • Only the tower and spire of the fine Victorian church, designed by Paul & Bickerdike, survive. A new church was built on an adjoining site in 1958-60.
  • The church cost £60,000 to build and was funded mainly by donations from the United States.
  • Christ Church was officially opened on July 4th 1876 to commemorate the centenary of the American declaration of independence.
