Fakten

  • The building is constructed on the site formerly occupied by Memorial Stadium, razed in 1991.
  • The unusual design was inspired by Minnesota's varied geologic landscapes.
  • The large granite geode is inspired by the Split Rock geologic formation along the North Shore of Lake Superior, northeast of Duluth.
  • The geode contains a 90 foot atrium and a reconstructed Memorial Arch, part of the original Memorial Football Stadium.
  • Window slits crisscross the geode, allowing slivers of light to move across the main entrance hall, reminiscent of the Northern Lights.
  • The interior of the atrium is covered in wood, reflecting Minnesota's North Woods, among the largest unbroken forests in the United States.
  • The main office block is clad in copper, reflecting the importance of northern Minnesota's Iron Range in the state's growth and development.
  • The copper is an interesting compliment to Weisman Art Museum, which is clad in stainless steel and was completed seven years earlier at the western edge of the East Bank campus.
  • The structural engineers were recognized with an American Institute of Steel Construction National Award in 2001 and a Consulting Engineers Council of Minnesota Grand Award in 2002.
  • Various interior and exterior water features are reminiscent of Minnesota's many lakes and rivers, epitomized by the famed "10,000 Lakes" slogan.
  • This building is connected by tunnel to the Radisson Hotel Metrodome.
  • The building houses offices for the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, the Minnesota Medical Foundation, and the Sponsored Projects Administration Department for the University of Minnesota.
