Fakten

  • The church is Grade I Listed.
  • The word Cripplegate is believed to derive from the Anglo-Saxon word 'cruplegate', which was a covered way or tunnel which ran from the town gate of Cripplegate to the Barbican, a fortified watchtower on the Roman wall of the City.
  • The church is dedicated to St. Giles, the patron saint of beggars and cripples.
  • The current church was built following a fire in 1545, and has been extensively repaired and rebuilt following both the Cripplegate fire in 1897 and heavy bombing in 1940 and 1941, when all that remained was the arcade, the outer walls and the tower.
  • Oliver Cromwell was married in St. Giles whilst the poet John Milton is said to have been buried here.
  • St. Giles' is one of a handful of medieval churches still standing in the City of London. Saxon and Norman churches have occupied this site, dating back several thousand years. The church was enlarged and rebuilt in 1394 during the reign of Richard II.
