Fakten

  • A church has occupied this site for more than a thousand years. It stood near the 'ald' gate into the walled City, and as Botolph was a popular saint it was used by travellers entering and leaving the City, as were churches dedicated to St. Botolph at Aldersgate, Billingsgate and Bishopsgate.
  • The original Saxon church was enlarged in 1418 and almost entirely rebuilt during the 16th Century. It survived the Great Fire, but was demolished as unsafe in 1739 and the present church was built.
  • The church organ is by Renatus Harris and is the oldest in London, if not Britain.
  • Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe was married here whilst William Syminton, the inventor of the first steamboat is buried in St. Botolph.
  • The church is named for St. Botolph, the Saxon patron saint of travellers who is England's equivalent of St. Christopher.
  • The interior was remodelled in the late 19th century by the architect of Westminster Cathedral, John Francis Bentley, who designed the carved ceiling and decorative plasterwork.
  • The reredos, which date from 1982, are by Thetis Blacker.
  • In 1941 the church was hit by a bomb which failed to explode.
