Fakten

  • Portions of this building were begun with prison labor about 1845, but it was an act of the U. S. Congress in 1874 which formally declared it a prison.
  • Kansas and Leavenworth received both fame and notoriety for decades because movies, jokes and television shows have immortalized the prison.
  • Demolition is expected to require 6,000 truckloads of debris to be hauled from the site in a process expected to take 18 months to complete.
  • The dome is painted masonry and was the first of many similarly-designed structures in the U. S. prison system.
  • There were eight wings behind the walls on a 12.5 acre site.
  • Some of the inmates were recognizable household names: Army Lt. Wm. Calley, convicted in 1971 for his role in the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam, and Marine Sgt. Clayton Lonetree, convicted in 1987 of spying for the former Soviet KGB.
  • The USBD closed in 2002 and it was estimated more than $60-million in renovations would have been needed to keep it in operation.
