Fakten

  • The site of the spire was occupied by a statue of Admiral Nelson atop a column which was blown up by the IRA in 1966; the spire is the result of a competition held to replace the column and provide an icon for Dublin in the 21st century.
  • The spire which is a hollow, tapering stainless steel tube, rises out of a hidden spiral of bronze and is 3 metres (9.8 feet) at the base tapering to just 15 centimetres (5.9 inches) at the top.
  • The spire is made from eight sections of rolled stainless steel, the bottom of which was polished continuously day and night for a month; the spire is also shot peened to give a part matt, part mirrored finish. The circular base is made from Kilkenny black marble.
  • The hollow interior houses two tuned mass dampers of 1,250kg and 800kg respectively, at a height of around 70 metres (230 feet) which counteract wind-induced sway.
  • The spire was a runner-up for the RIBA 2004 Stirling Prize for Architecture.
  • The base is gently lit at night whilst the top is brightly lit and acts as an aircraft warning beacon.
  • The Dublin Spire is the city centre's tallest structure.
