Fakten

  • Demolished to make way for a never-built Social Security Building.
  • Once serving as Birmingham's primary rail station, this was demolished to make way for an expansion of the Red Mountain Expressway between 1st Avenue North and Interstates 20/59 in late 1969.
  • Opened on April 6, 1909, to the general public.
  • Modeled after Istanbul's St. Sophia mosque, its two distinctive towers were influenced by Sophia's minarets.
  • The final train to use the station was the "City of Miami" on September 21, 1969, with its demolition commencing the following day.
  • Between 1926-1952, a large electric sign saying "Birmingham, the Magic City" was located along the western approach to the station and served as a very visable local landmark.
  • All that now remains of the station is the 5th Avenue North Tunnel which runs underneath where the station and its adjacent rail yard once stood.
