  • A church has stood here since 1012 and is named in honour of St. Alfege who was martyred on this site in that year.
  • A second church was built on this site around 1290 which collapsed in 1710.
  • The current church was dedicated in 1718.
  • St. Alfege is of note for its oval ceiling, which at the time was the largest single-span ceiling in Europe.
  • The church exhibits stained glass by Francis Spear, wood carvings attributed to Grinling Gibbons and wrought ironwork by Jean Tijou.
