Fakten

  • The Skylon was designed as a sculptural focul point for London's 1951 Festival of Britain (3rd May to 30th September 1951), initiated as a 'tonic for the nation' to cheer up Britain's post-war austerity.
  • The structure was hollow, 12-sided and broadly lozenge or cigar-shaped with an internal steel frame clad in aluminium.
  • Skylon was suspended by steel cables and appeared to float in the sky with no apparent means of visible support.
  • After the end of the Festival of Britain, Skylon was dismantled and sold for scrap.
  • The Skylon was supported on three pylons around 21.3 metres (70 feet) high and seemed to float at a height of around 12 metres (40 feet) above the ground - the structure was illuminated at night.
  • The site on which Skylon once sat is just a few seconds' walk from an equally iconic structure, the The London Eye.
