Fakten

  • This church is an early work of Cass Gilbert, who started his career in St. Paul.
  • Gilbert became quite famous after moving his practice to New York City. His most famous buildings include the Minnesota State Capitol, less than a mile to the northeast, and the Woolworth Building, the world's tallest from 1913-1930.
  • The parish house on the east end was added in 1922, designed by St. Paul architect Clarence Johnston.
  • Somewhat inspired by Norwegian stave churches, the architect followed similar design themes with the St. Martin's-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church, completed 2 years later in west suburban Minnetonka Beach.
  • It stands directly across the street from Frank Boyd Park, named for the leader of the Sleeping Car Porters' Union and a prominent member of St. Paul's early African-American community.
  • The Virginia Street Swedenborgian Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing member of St. Paul's Historic Hill District.
