Fakten

  • Until its destruction by the Jordanian Legion in 1948, Hurva Synagogue was one of the two tallest buildings in the Jewish Quarter.
  • The arch is one of its four main arches that was reconstructed to mark the dome.
  • Seating 450, it was one of the two main synagogues of the Old City's Jewish Quarter.
  • Although unbuilt, the site is widely regarded as an open air synagogue.
  • The Hurva Arch was taken down in January of 2006 in the process of rebuilding the New Hurva Synagogue.
  • Architect Louis Kahn's 1967-72 plan for a new monumental synagogue was turned down.
  • Controversy over restoration was settled in a 1998 municipal resolution to rebuild the synagogue at a sum of NIS 28 million.
  • Meaning 'ruin', the name Hurva was actually given as the Ashkenaz Synagogue was started in the 1700's, but had remained incomplete until permits were granted in 1836.
