Fakten

  • The Skidmore Fountain is the oldest public piece of art in Portland.
  • The fountain's inscription says, “Good Citizens are the Riches of a City.”.
  • The fountain was named after Stephen Skidmore (1838-83), who in his will devoted the yet unbuilt fountain to "horses, men, and dogs".
  • For the grand opening, Henry Wienhard offered to run a beer hose from his brewery to the fountain; city leaders concerned for the wellbeing of the horses turn downed the offer.
  • New York-based sculptor Olin L. Warner was commissioned to design the fountain.
  • The fountain was dedicated on September 22, 1888.
  • The fountain is 14 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
  • Skidmore dedicated 5000 USD toward the building of the fountain. The balance was raised by a committee headed by Henry Failing.
