Fakten

  • Upon its completion, this beacame the first single-span suspension bridge west of the Mississippi River.
  • Several sources note that the bridge was a model for the Brooklyn Bridge which is probably true since both were designed by John Roebling.
  • Between 2.7 to 3 million bricks were used in the bridge's construction.
  • Planning began in 1866. The design was crafted in October of 1868, and the bridge began construction in January 1869, and completed exactly one year later.
  • In 1971 the bridge was closed to automobile traffic and only pedestrian traffic was allowed.
  • The nearest railroad to Waco at the time was over 100 miles away. Building materials had to be carried by boat from Galveston to Bryan. From there they were pulled by ox teams to Waco.
  • The first bridge tolls were collected on January 1, 1870. The cost of the bridge was paid completely by tolls.
  • The longest single-span suspension bridge in the world when completed in 1870.
