Fakten

  • The bridge opened to traffic on December 3, 1982. Since then it has become a local landmark and familar sight among the hills in west Austin.
  • The bridge was named after Percy V. Pennybacker Jr., a Texas Department of Transportation engineer.
  • Almost 50,000 cars cross the bridge daily.
  • The bridge was designed with the arch sweeping away towards the shore so the bridge could take up as little space as possible over the river and not have pillars in the water. The width of the river at this point is approximately 520 feet wide.
  • At the time of construction, the bridge was only the second of its design-type in the world.
  • The Pennybacker Bridge resembles the Hoan Bridge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Both were the only two of their kind during the 1980s.
  • The road deck is made up of 3,400 tons of concrete. 600 million pounds of steel were used in the construction.
  • Construction began in the summer 1980. One year later the main span started construction. In Feburary 1982 construction of the arch began.
  • In 1984 the bridge won 1st place in the Federal Administration's Excellence in Highway Design competition. In 1992 the bridge was selected by the Austin chapter of the Consulting Engineers Council of Texas. The bridge was picked as the most innovative example of Austin architecture.
  • 1,150 feet long in total with a main span length of 600 feet.
  • The road deck is 70 feet above Lake Austin, (Colorado River).
  • The bridge is an untied steel arch suspension span bridge. 72 steel cables are used to support the road deck.
