Fakten

  • The Belfry is the oldest in Belgium and Northern Europe.
  • It is a symbol of self-administration of Tournai, a right that was granted by Philippe Auguste, King of France.
  • The Belfry has been completely restored (1992-2000).
  • The Belfry is accessible to the public and the top floor provides visitors a nice view of the old city of Tournai.
  • In 1999, the belfry was designated a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • It takes exactly 256 steps on spiral stairs to the top this belfry.
  • According to historical sources, the very first tower had around 1217 two bells and a height of merely 30 m.
  • In 1294, the height of the belfry was increased, since the construction of the gothic nave of La Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Tournai obstructed the view of the guards in the tower.
  • It takes until 1535 before the first carillon is installed. A dragon and other gold plated spiral ornaments are placed on the roof of the tower.
  • The tower was renovated in 1844 and from an architectural point of view modified to a more gothic look.
  • From 1392 to 1400, the belfry is thoroughly reconstructed after a fire, which occurred in 1391. At the same time new bells are installed in the tower.
